Renew Car Registration

A few  weeks before your registration expires, you will receive a notice from the  IN BMV, stating that your car registration renewal is due. This notice will include information such as  your renewal date, details about the fees, ways you can renew your registration and information about the emission testing.  The renewal procedure is fairly simple and the IN BMV offers four ways to complete this process:

  • In person
  • By mail
  • Online
  • By phone

How to Renew Car Registration in Person

If you need your registration right away, the best way for you to do it is in person, at  your local BMV office. If you want to leave the branch with your new registration and plate stickers in hand, make sure you bring along the required documents, which include:

  • The IN BMV renewal notice or current registration certificate.
  • Your car insurance.
  • Proof of an emissions testing report or certificate, if required.
  • Payment for the renewal services (credit card, cash orcheck).

The fees charged to complete a car registration renewal tend to vary, depending on the type of vehicle you drive or or the country where you reside in Indiana. General fees are as follows:

  • Standard passenger car: $21.35
  • Trucks (based on weight): $30.35 to $965.75
  • Motorcycle: $26.35
  • RV: $29.75

How to Renew  Car Registration by Mail

To renew your registration by mail, you will have to follow the instructions on the renewal notice you received. Make sure you read the information carefully, gather the necessary documents and mail then to the appointed address on the notice envelope.  Make sure to include proper payment for the renewal fee.

If you have not received a renewal notice, contact the local BMV office to check if your current address is on file.

Your renewed car registration materials should be mailed to you within  14 days time.

How to Renew Car Registration Online

Online vehicle registration renewal is the easiest way to complete the process without leaving the comfort of your own home. The first thing you need to do is visit the IN BMV website and create an account on the myBMV webpage. Double check your entered information and provide proof of an emissions testing report or certificate,if requested. In order to pay for the renewal fee, use an e-check or a credit card. Once you finish this transaction, print your payment receipt and wait for your renewal registration items to be delivered within 14 business days.

How to Renew Car Registration by Phone

Another easy way to renew your car registration is by phone, plus it will take up a few minutes of your time.
